Handbag Display

This Dichromatic Handbag display piece for Selfridges was an enjoyable challenge in both design and fabrication.

Its creation required many disciplines including steel fabrication and the use of a CNC.

The concept was drawn up in 3D by the design department and then using a tool that breaks 3d drawings down into a net, each individual piece or facet could be sent through to the CNC router.

I cut the facets out of MDF allowing for the thickness of the steel structure and then used these pieces and cable ties to build the shape of the cone. Once all the pieces were connected and the form could hold its own shape, the steel peices were welded.

Once the MDF was removed the steel structure would hold its own shape and could be sent to be painted.

Above, the structure can be seen broken down into it's individual facets and below, how the frame was constructed before spray finishing.

The final piece was adorned with acrylic panels that were covered in a dichromatic film.

This meant the acrylic had to be cut with a certain type of cutter, and in a particular orientation to prevent the film from tearing or producing a sub standard edge.

Once the pieces were cut they were placed into the framework and discreetly tied in position, creating this eye catching final product with central product mounted on a raised wall in Selfridges, London.
